It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Helene Collette Coutu on October 23, 2025 at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 69 years.
Born in Winnipeg and raised in St. Laurent, Manitoba, Helene’s life was filled with warmth, laughter and boundless love. She built a life defined by care and compassion and always put others before herself. Whether at home or at work, Helene’s kindness and generosity touched everyone she met. She worked tirelessly in the hospitality industry, sharing her dedication and spirit with her coworkers at Aramark, Canadian Linen and the Airport Motor Inn Hotel.
Helene had a heart made for giving and a soul that lifted all those around her. She was a natural caregiver. She always made sure everyone was cared for and was a comforting presence in both joyous and difficult times. Her laughter was infectious, her humour unmatched and her love for those around her undeniable. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards and had a special ability to turn any floor into the perfect place for jigging and dancing.
Helene was predeceased by her husband Steve Barnum; her parents Leander and Aurea Coutu; her brothers John, Frederick (Guy), and Frank Coutu; her sister Betty Coutu; her aunt Jackie Boudreau; her nephew Clayton Coutu; her niece Crystal Coutu and her beloved dog Annie.
She leaves behind her common-law partner Patrick Lush; her devoted children Darren (Roberta), Dwayne (Shannon) and Stephanie (Shak) Coutu; her cherished grandchildren Chantal Wahteeshkin, Colin Ashley, AJ Fuerst, Donavon Coutu, Jalil Abdulla and Venice Coutu, who were her greatest pride and joy. She is also lovingly remembered by her brothers Girard (Zab), Robert, Russell, Gillbert and Leander Coutu (Junior); her sisters Denise and Annette Coutu; and her many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
Helene’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all those fortunate enough to have known her. Her laughter, her love and her presence were the heart of every gathering, and her memory will forever live on in the stories and hearts of her family.
A viewing will take place on Friday, November 7, 2025 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by a Celebration of Life at 10:00 a.m. with Father Sam Argenziano officiating. Lunch will follow the Celebration of Life at a to-be-determined location.
