Sophie Pogranyi, age 90 of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg on December 1, 2025.
She was born on June 7, 1935, in Rembrandt, Manitoba to Daniel and Barbara Tarabalka who came to Winnipeg from East Galicia Austria-Hungary. Sophie attended school in Rembrandt until grade eight and then moved with her mother and siblings to Winnipeg.
She married Arnold Caughy on September 22, 1956, and they had three children, Ronald, Sandra and Shelly. She married Lou Pogranyi on June 15, 2002, after the death of her first husband on January 9, 1999. Unfortunately, Lou has since passed away on January 14, 2023.
She worked as a Data Entry Clerk in Eaton’s Catalogue Department at both locations: Downtown Eaton’s Department Store and Eaton’s Warehouse for 14 years. She enjoyed the work she did and loved the coworkers that she worked with.
She was known for her love of watching sports, especially baseball, hockey and curling. She also enjoyed going to the Legion and dancing on Saturday nights. Friends and family will remember her for always taking pride of her appearance and her Smile.
Sophie was preceded in death by her father Daniel, mother Barbara, her five brothers: Bill, Matt, Sam, Mike, and George and her four sisters: Lena, Mary, Pearl, and Anne. She is survived by her son Ron, and daughters, Sandra (Dean) and Shelly (Brad). Grandchildren Jenesis, Alyssa, Ryan (Nicole), Deanna (Jordan), Travis (Kaitlyn) and Jaclyn (Matt). Great-grandchildren Ophelia, Cameron, Marshall and Mallory.
A Memorial Service will be held on December 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sophie’s life. A late lunch will be served after the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
