SOPHIE GIERYS
Aged 92 Years
Sophie Gierys our loving mom, Grandma (Baba) passed away peacefully late Saturday evening December 20, 2025 at the age of 92. Sophie was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Ted Gierys. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Sandra Petrynko (Brian), sons Terry Gierys (Judy) and Gerald (Kendra), grandchildren Terren, Michael (Jenny), Andrew (Gail), Isabella (James) and great-grandson Theo. Sophie also leaves to mourn her brother Steve (Sharon), sisters Mary and Eva.
Sophie was born Feb 15, 1933 in Silver, MB and came from a family of 14, 6 boys and 8 girls. Mom had many fond stories of growing up on the farm. She attended the small school until age of 16 when she left for Winnipeg to attend St. Benedict’s and then St. Johns High school.
Sophie’s first job was Ash Temple delivering dental supplies by streetcar. Later she worked at McLeod’s in the Mail Department and then moved on to working at the Wheatboard.
Mom and Dad met a St. Nicholas Saturday night dance and shortly thereafter were married on June 14, 1958. Their first house was at 171 Essar and later would build their forever home at 74 Essar. Mom celebrated her 90th Birthday there before moving into River Ridge.
Sophie’s love for her kitchen and baking was undeniable. All birthdays, holidays, every supper, lunch were in the kitchen being prepared with lots of love. Mom’s kitchen was not limited to cooking and baking, as any typical Ukrainian home, there were always plenty of canning, pickling in our house to last through the winters. Mustard pickles, beets, peaches, pears, cherries, and of course saskatoons to name a few.
Summers were enjoyed at the cottage in Gimli, berry and mushroom picking, fishing trips and camping to Dauphin River, Anama Bay, Gypsumville, and many family weddings and anniversaries.
Funeral service will be Saturday December 27, 2025, 10:00 a.m., Holy Eucharist Parish Church, 505 Watt Street. Lunch will be served at the celebration of Sophie’s life. An interment will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association.
