RICHARD WILLIAM YUNYK

On December 1, 2025, surrounded by family, Rick passed away from his yearlong battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was born on March 16, 1951, to Bill (William) and Mary Yunyk. Rick is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pat Lumsden, and their children, Brydon (Joyanne), Cristine, and David. Also left to mourn are his mother, Mary, brother Jim (Connie), brother-in-law Tom (Janis), sister-in-law Lori (Tim), mother-in-law Berna (Van) two nephews, six nieces and his precious grandchildren, Kaden and Zolie. He was pre-deceased by his father Bill and son Ryan.

Rick was proud of his North End Winnipeg roots and finished his education at Fort Richmond Collegiate following a family move. He enjoyed a 40-year career as a laboratory technician in the Department of Biology at the University of Manitoba. Rick had many interests and talents, including nature photography, cooking, sports, including curling and baseball, music, especially his piano and perhaps most of all, fishing. He was a skilled builder and repairman for so many projects at his home.

We would like to thank the many health care people and institutions who worked so hard to make his life as comfortable as possible, including the ALS Society of Manitoba, the Deer Lodge Centre Motor Neuron Disease Clinic, Palliative Care Manitoba, Community Therapy Services occupational and physical therapy, family doctor L. Lach, and many others.

A Celebration of Life for Rick will be held on January 10, 2026, at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive at 2:00 p.m. If you would like to honour Rick's memory with a donation, we would be pleased to see it go to the ALS Society of Manitoba or the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation directed to the Motor Neuron Disease Clinic.

  • I first met Rick at a Grey Cup party in 1976. It was my first date with my then to be husband Rock, and I’ll never forget that day. The brotherhood of friends that stood the test of time, was how I’d describe our group of friends. We had so many laughs over the years. I remember Rick’s soft spoken way, and his beautiful smile. I am so saddened to say, not good-bye, but see you later. Love and hugs to Pat and family. - Posted by: Rock and Joy Beatty (friends) on: Jan 02, 2026

  • Rick’s family lived just up the street from mine on Pasadena Avenue in Kings Park (original area of Fort Richmond out back of the U of MB) and we both graduated from Ft. Richmond Collegiate, along with our entire posse of friends at the time, Terry, Laurie and John Ward, Jim Gregorchuk and a list of folks too long to go into. Rick, my then husband Jim and I, and Terry Ward and Bruce Beaton travelled together on an epic August 1977 trip in a rented RV to Bruce’s hometown of East Lake, near Souris, PEI and it was the funnest two weeks ever! Was the summer of sunshine and we were all young and living the high life (at least we believed we were!) My condolences to Rick’s family and friends … gone too soon … RIP Rick! - Posted by: Joanne Weir (High school and part of our group of friends all in our 20s during the 70s) on: Dec 30, 2025

  • Very sorry for your loss. My sincere condolences to Rick's family. Friend of Rick during our time in Junior and high school years. Also worked with Rick at the Bay downtown in the Parcel Room (a job he referred me for as students). Rick was always a class act and a very nice person. He will be missed but never forgotten.
