JOHN (CURLY) DOMITRUK

Curly passed from his earthly life to eternal sleep on January 1, 2026, age ninety-two, surrounded by his loving family.

Curly was born on the farm near Vita on August 9, 1933, to Ukrainian immigrant parents, Paul and Annie Domitruk.

Curly leaves to cherish his memory his wife, of nearly seventy years, Fran, children, Daryl (Rhonda) and Char (Gord), grandchildren, Kaleigh, Brenna (Brenton), Evelyn (Mat), Owen (Brenna) and great-grandson Henrik. He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law Sonia. Curly was predeceased by his parents, sister Florence and brothers, Maurice, Tommy, Willy and Steve as well as in-laws, Irv, Myrtle, and Jean.

Curly lost his father when he was young, but he and his family persevered. Curly became a noted hockey goalie and southpaw pitcher with the storied Vita Cubs ball club. As a young man Curly enjoyed many barn dances. Sports and dancing remained fixtures in his life.

In the late 1940’s Curly joined Manitoba Power Commission. He retired from Manitoba Hydro after a thirty-seven year span of assignments in Stonewall, Powerview and Grand Marais and, ultimately, Selkirk, where he pioneered several hot line maintenance techniques.

Curly met Senkiw’s Fran Rybuck at the Vita skating rink after helping her up from a fall. The two were married in 1956. Curly became a spirited and dedicated member of the Rybuck family.

Between moves with Hydro, Curly and Fran started a family. Daryl was born in 1961 followed by Char in 1964. Curly actively supported his children in school, sports and the arts. The family toured Manitoba and Canada in a truck camper. Boats were a constant source of recreation and pride.

Meticulous and resourceful, Curly lent his skills to many building and electrical projects for family, neighbours, churches and community facilities.

Retiring to Winnipeg Beach, Curly and Fran enjoyed sailing, community events and extensive travel in their motorhome. Grandchildren became their focus and Curly revelled in being an attentive and caring grandpa. “The Beach” was a second home for the grandkids.

The Beach years also cemented many friendships, especially those founded on camping and golf parties with the rambunctious Butter Brickle Gang. Never a great golfer, Curly again persevered and was rewarded with one confirmed hole-in-one (apparently, several await verification).

Later, Curly and Fran moved to Kiwanis on the Red in Selkirk where their circle of friends grew and Curly enhanced his reputation as “Mr. Fix-it”. He followed virtually every Blue Jay game from spring training to season’s end.

Curly passed with dignity and peace his status secured as a great family man, community supporter, colleague and friend. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Selkirk and District Community Foundation.

In keeping with Curly’s wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church, Selkirk. Service will be livestreamed.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I worked for Curly while we were employed by Manitoba Hydro. He was a great supervisor, easy to get along with and very understanding to a "kid" so far from home. The most memorable event was doing 230kv hand contact at the Overflow Station on #10 highway south of The Pas. Rest in Peace Curly. - Posted by: Robert Crawley (Co worker) on: Jan 03, 2026
