Peacefully, on December 13, 2025, Hugh Gerard Wentworth Swandel passed away at the age of 94 in Victoria, British Columbia. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene (née Watson) in February 2018.
Hugh and Irene were the proud parents of six children: Catherine; Justin (Diana); Simon (Tracy); Nicholas (Tammie); Hugh (Signy); and Richard (Anna). Hugh was deeply proud of his ten grandchildren and spoke often of his family in his later years.
Hugh was born on June 11, 1931, in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Hugh and Gladys Swandel. His childhood was filled with adventure alongside his six siblings, enjoying both city life and time in rural Northern Ireland. As a young man Hugh trained as a schoolteacher and pursued his passion for the arts as a professional stage actor.
In the late 1960s, Canada faced a shortage of teachers, and in 1967 Hugh and Irene immigrated to Canada with their young family. They settled in Winnipeg, where Hugh spent many years teaching at St. John's High School. He was deeply committed to his students, supporting numerous student initiatives and contributing enthusiastically to the school's theatrical productions. During this time, Hugh also completed a Bachelor of Science degree and a master's degree in education. His teaching career was enriched by close friendships with colleagues and shared passion for the outdoors.
While living in Canada, Hugh developed a love for the Canadian wilderness. He was an avid canoeist and shared this passion with students, friends, and family, embarking on many memorable trips throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, including an especially notable trip on the Dumoine River early in his retirement.
Throughout his life, Hugh maintained a strong commitment to writing and acting. He wrote and performed numerous stories for CBC Radio, published short stories in national magazines, wrote novels and participated in local theatre and television productions.
Hugh will also be fondly remembered for his happiness when gardening, his dedication to daily walks well into his nineties and his love of completing crossword puzzles every day. His curiosity, creativity, and love of family were constant throughout his life. Hugh's memory lives on through his children and grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Manitoba Harvest or another food bank.
