December 19, 2025

George Katsabanis, born February 29, 1936, in the mountains of Katsabaneika, Greece, has peacefully passed at the age of 89 in Winnipeg, Canada surrounded by his family.

George immigrated to Canada in 1962 where he met his wife Jutta at the Original Food Bar where they both worked. They had two sons, Tony and Peter. George began a career selling real estate for "Select Home Realty", when in 1972 he was recognized by the Winnipeg Real Estate Board as being the number one selling agent of that year, something he was always proud of. Following this he began his own brokerage Dorion Realty, named after the village in Greece his family eventually settled in.

George was also a prominent restauranteur best known for co-founding Homer's Restaurant at 520 Ellice Avenue in Winnipeg with his brother, sister and her husband in 1979. The family-run establishment quickly gained popularity for its Greek and Mediterranean dishes, and innovations like introducing chicken souvlaki that they pioneered after experimenting with marinated chicken breast. It went on to be recognized as the best Greek Restaurant in Western Canada by the prominent magazine Western Living. George ran Homers for 45 years until his retirement in 2024.

He was very proud of his Greek heritage and the Winnipeg Greek community which he was an active member of, serving a term as President. He was also a member of The Order Of AHEPA since 1968 becoming president in 1990 and one of the driving forces in establishing the Greek Islands Pavilion.

George was a great conversationalist and had many friends around the world from all walks of life and will be remembered as a generous man that was always there to help others in need.

George is survived by his wife Jutta, his son Tony and his wife Miranda, his son Peter and his wife Tracey, his brother Sam and his wife Simone, and his grandchildren Alex, Arianna, Amelie, Margaux, and Claire, and his nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers, Vassilis Katsabanis, Demetrios Katsabanis, and Andonis Katsabanis, and his sister Anna Panopoulos.
