LEILA FARRELL
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leila Elma Emilia Farrell at the age of 92 years.
Leila was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Brian Michael Farrell, her daughter, Launa Patricia Farrell, her first husband Louis Johnston, her parents Elma and Jaakko Luoma and stepmother Kaarina Luoma, siblings Lilja, Leino, Leo, Lauri and Lenni, sisters-in-law Irma, Hilkka and Susan and brother-in-law Juho.
Leila will be lovingly remembered by her children; Liisa (Russ), Kelly (Randall), Michael (Cheryl), and grandchildren; Kurstyn (Collin and Ava), Erin (Cam), Matti (Vivian), Luke, Cody, Kacey, and her great-granddaughter, Henley; her siblings Liisa, Launo and Luja, brother-in-law Jouko, sister-in-law Gwen and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Finland.
Leila was born in South Porcupine, Ontario. After graduating two years early she attended North Bay Teachers’ College at the age of 17. She taught multiple grade levels in Balsam Creek, Ontario, and grade six at the RCAF base in North Bay where she met Brian.
Leila was an avid curler and spent many years on the executive and as an honourary life member of the CFB Winnipeg Curling Club and curled with the Charleswood Legion. She was president of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association from 1989-1990 and was recognized by CurlManitoba with an honourary life membership in 1991.
Leila was always a teacher, helping everyone in the family through their school years. She was an excellent seamstress and made all the family wedding and grad dresses. She was a gifted crafter, gardener, and carpenter. She was a talented singer and organist and cherished her Finnish heritage.
A private funeral and interment will be held.
