NORMA SMOLINSKI
It is with profound sadness that the family of Norma Smolinski announces her peaceful passing on January 3, 2026 at the age of 79 years, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 16, 1946 Norma lived a wonderful life full of love and rich in family, community and adventure.
Norma was the daughter of Jean Stetz and Michael Kozub and the beloved wife of David Smolinski for 64 years. She is survived by her children, Laurie (Sergei), Clarence (Ramona), and Darryl (Denise); grandchildren, Jeremy (Nin) and Graham (Ashley) Campbell, Evanna and Daniel Ivanchuk, Evan (Michelle), Dwight (Kira), Cody, Hannah (Lane) and Ethan (Ashley); great-grandchildren, Ava, Noah, Tenleigh, Cesare, Theodora, Emma and Rowen; brother Robert (Lorraine); sisters, Jeannette and Geraldine (Barry); brother-in-law Roy (Carol), sisters-in-law, Grace (Nels), Marie, and Debbie (Jim), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her cherished daughter Tracy, infant sister Rose Marie, and brothers-in-law, Bill and Lawrence.
Norma grew up on the family farm in Hayak and married David in 1961. They farmed and raised their family together in Shorncliffe until they retired and moved to Arborg. Norma was nurturing and compassionate and had a natural way with animals and people. She gladly accepted the role of caregiver to many. She wasn’t afraid of hard work on the farm, always had a big garden and beautiful flowers, and was a wonderful cook - family favorites included her cabbage rolls, dill pickles, and perogies. She lived for spending time with her family, social gatherings, and enjoyed music and dancing. Norma also loved camping and travelling. She and David made many memories travelling across Canada and to too many countries to mention; she was always planning their next adventure.
Community involvement included treasurer for the St. Philip’s Neri Ladies’ Aid, Chairperson of the Riverdale Workshop, and member of the Arborg and District Health Auxiliary. Norma was always willing to help out with baking, fundraising or whatever was needed. She really enjoyed floor curling “with the girls” and went to as many of her grandchildren’s hockey games and school events as she could.
When faced with a difficult diagnosis, Norma displayed extraordinary strength and resilience and kept living her life to its fullest as long as she possibly could. She portrayed a selfless example of courage, humility and love and her inspiration will be felt by all of us forever.
The family would like to extend a special thank you and heartfelt appreciation to the incredible staff at the Gimli Community Cancer Program, Johnson Memorial Hospital, the Arborg Home Care Nurses, Cancer Care Manitoba HSC, Dr. David Christiansen, and Dr. Nazim for their dedication to Norma’s comfort and compassionate care.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held on January 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Arborg Community Hall, Father Vijay Deivanayagam officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be her seven grandsons. Burial at the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery will take place immediately afterward with lunch to follow. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Humane Society.
The angels have you now in their warm embrace Norma. You were an extraordinary person with a blessed life who truly understood that the purpose of life is to love – how lucky we were to have you in our lives.
