ALVIN ROLAND HERMAN

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Alvin (Al) Herman on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB with his loving wife and family by his side.

Alvin was born on September 19, 1934, on the family farm near Rhein, SK to his parents, George Jacob and Martha Herman. He was raised on that farm along with his brothers and sisters: Arnold, Lawrence, Irene and Ruthie. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Christ Lutheran Church in Rhein, SK. His schooling took place at Wallace School, a short walk from his home or as Dad claimed, "a mile both ways uphill and in a foot of snow". Alvin enjoyed playing baseball in Rhein and started a baseball league.

Al was a Sunday School teacher, a lay minister, a faithful man of God. He was a charter member of three different Lutheran churches in Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba.

He met the love of his life Marlene while working in Atikokan and she was a nurse in Pine Falls. He later was transferred to Pine Falls and the rest is history. They married on October 8, 1960, in Winnipeg, MB. Sons, Dwayne and Micheal were born in Thompson, MB. Daughters, Deborah and Linda were born in Peace River, AB.

Al was a Hudson’s Bay/ NorthWest Company lifer. Starting as a shipper receiver in 1954 in Yorkton, SK and ending his career in the Winnipeg Home office as a District Manager in 1992. Then was contracted to do Store Closings throughout Canada from 1992 to 1995.

Family was the most important thing for Alvin. He spent a lot of time at the hockey rink with both his boys, time at the ball diamonds with his daughter, attended school plays, band recitals and dance recitals. He curled with the Hudson’s Bay curling club and played on their ball team for many years. He spent many evenings watching his grandkids playing hockey, baseball and soccer. He spent many summers at the farm, with his children and grandchildren. The family spent many vacations camping at Luther Village on Dog Tooth Lake.

After retirement Mom and Dad travelled the world, exploring locations, making memories and making life-long friends.

Al was predeceased by his parents, George Jacob and Martha Herman, brothers, Arnold and Lawrence, sister Irene and brother-in-law, Dan Risling, sister Ruthie.

Al is survived by his loving wife Marlene; children, Dwayne (Jill) Herman, Michael (Carolyn) Herman, Deborah (Craig) Judt, Linda Herman; grandchildren, Brian (Natalie) Herman, Cooper and Ellie, Luke (Kim) Herman, Bo, Jacob (Sheena) Judt, Benjamin Judt; sisters-in-law, Loretta Herman and Audrey Herman; and many dear nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, 10:30 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Road, Winnipeg with Pastor Tyler Gingrich officiating.
