KATHERINE (AUDREY) MACKENZIE
Born: Mar 30, 1928
Date of Passing: Feb 25, 2026
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHERINE (AUDREY) MACKENZIE
On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 25, 2026 surrounded by family and her friends at Oakview Place, Audrey passed peacefully to her eternal rest. She joins her parents, Jim and Nora Wherrett, sisters, Josephine and Merle, and her lifelong love, Ernest "Ross" Mackenzie, married 66 years.
Growing up in the Wolseley area of Winnipeg, she had an extended family originating from Shoal Lake, MB. Rarely living a quiet life, Audrey was active throughout her young years, with many friends through her activity at Greenwood United Church and athletics at Gordon Bell High School. Later, after attending United College in Winnipeg, plus a year in Toronto to train in Physical Education teaching, Audrey returned to have a successful career as a teacher around Winnipeg, finishing as a Guidance Counsellor at Tec Voc High School.
Audrey’s life always revolved around her family - her children, Donna Hunter (Blaine Mooney), Pat (Dave) Gural, and Jim (Laurel) Mackenzie; grandchildren, Patrick (Savanna), Evan (Lucy), Jeff (Pati), Jackie (Blain), Jamie, Jenna (Lucas) and Rob (Clarissa); predeceased by granddaughter Crystal; seven great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Joseph, Owen, Payden, Anthony, Owen and Abby. Many great memories are shared of summers at Victoria Beach, family dinners that HAD to end in a group photograph, and travels throughout North America and abroad.
Endlessly surprising and always active, Audrey had a huge circle of friends through Greenwood United Church Young Peoples, later her involvement with Toastmistress (ITC) through which she presented at conferences around the world, her neighbours and Victoria Beach community friends, and many others. From being one of the first female lifeguards in western Canada at Sherbrook Pool, to achieving her pilot’s license after her 40th birthday, even starting a business with a friend to teach public speaking to adult learners, there was no challenge too great - when she set her mind to something you could consider it done.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Oakview Place and Kiwanis Courts for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the garden at Oakview Place would be appreciated.
A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Place, Winnipeg, on Saturday April 18, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.

It was a great joy to look after Audrey and Ross. Audrey loved family. The visits with Patty and Donna and the visits with Jim when he would travel to Winnipeg. She will be missed but not forgotten. My condolences to you all. - Posted by: Tina (Friend) on: Apr 15, 2026

Audrey was such a shining light and positive force. Her dad (Uncle Jim) was our grandmother's brother, and we (sister Barb and mom, Betty Feniak) saw Jim and Nora and Audrey and Ross often while growing up in Winnipeg. Such special and genuine people. Who can forget charades at Jim and Nora's? Moving to Toronto I was happy to connect with Audrey's sisters, Merle and Josephine (and family) from time to time. And i always remember Uncle Jim tutoring me in math over a few days at Victoria Beach to help me in my 'worst subject. Aunt Nora, like Audrey, could always bring a smile. April 18 is my grand-daughter, Natalie's 3rd birthday, so i'll be here in 'the East' but thinking of Audrey and Ross and family -- and her life well-lived. - Posted by: Peter Feniak (Family via Wherrets of Shoal Lake.) on: Apr 14, 2026

I offer sincere condolences to the family of Audrey. I met Audrey through ITC where she was a wonderful friend and mentor. I have not seen her for several years but she is remembered fondly. - Posted by: Esther Mckenty (friend) on: Apr 13, 2026

My condolences to you, Donna and family, on the passing of your lovely mother. I recall her being the guidance counsellor at General Wolfe School when I was there. She was well liked and very popular with the students. - Posted by: June Pospishell (school friend) on: Apr 05, 2026
