  • I first met Carl about 25 years ago. Carl (and Anne if I recall correctly) attended the Fur Harvesters Convention in North Bay, Ontario. A small contingent from Manitoba, spearheaded by Roger Toews, flew to Toronto then drove to North Bay. Having a licence to drive the van got me into this distinguished group by default. We spent a couple of nights there and I recall one evening a bunch of us gathered in one of the rented rooms. The beverages and tall tales were flowing freely. It was nary impossible to interject and get a word in edgewise, let alone convey your own narrative. I recall noticing one individual quietly taking in all of the mirth and merriment. It was Carl. He was very distinguished, polite and soft spoken. In future years I would make use of my tracking skills to seek out Carl at Manitoba Trappers Association Conventions, perhaps much to his chagrin? We would share pleasantries and experiences. He will be remembered as a wonderful, “salt of the earth” gentleman. - Posted by: Richard Lepage (Friend) on: Apr 18, 2026

  • Jerry has many fond memories of Carl from his visits to Loon Straits, the first as meeting him as the maintenance guy, grading roads and cutting grass. Over the years he got to know you Anne and your family a little more. We were saddened to hear of his passing and sorry we missed the memorial by a day. May you and your family heal quickly from this loss and find peace and solace in your photos and memories of him. - Posted by: Deanna & Jerry Zaretski (Friends) on: Apr 18, 2026

  • To Anne and the Monkman family. My sincere and heartfelt condolences on the loss of Carl, a kind, gentle, quiet man with a big heart. Our paths crossed many times during my career; at trapper meetings, open houses and the last receiving day at the fur auction in Winnipeg. Carl's fur was always meticulously prepared and a pleasure to inspect. He was also a master wood carver and I am the proud recepient of one of his carvings. Rest in Peace my friend - Posted by: David Bewick (Friend) on: Apr 17, 2026

  • Glenn and I were saddened to hear of Carl's passing and send our condolences to his family. I am the eldest daughter of Bernie and Maude Dyck and carry fond memories of Loon Straits as a child where Carl would come fetch us in his big boat at Calder's dock and bring us over for a visit with Aunty Verna and Uncle Merv. We came to know the entire family over our lifetime and many trips to Loon Straits over the years. Blessings and love to everyone. • Dear Ann, and the family of Carl, I’m so sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. When I was 10 years old (1961), my father, Jake Wiebe, was the high school teacher in Loon Straits. Our family lived in a beautiful new space, a teacherage which was part of the new high school, built by Carl. I remember him as a very big friendly, handsome giant. I hope you can find some comfort in your memories of Carl. Margaret Grylls (nee Wiebe) - Posted by: Margaret Grylls (nee Wiebe) (Friend) on: Apr 13, 2026
