BARBARA BRUSER
Barbara Josephine Bruser, 83, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 9, in Toronto.
She lived in Toronto most of her life and loved the city. It seemed to satisfy her extensive interests, both rugged and refined.
She attended events hosted by the University Women’s Club of Toronto and was a fervent theatregoer. She was also a serious fan of the Canadian Football League. She followed the Blue Bombers, for whom her father, orthopaedic surgeon Dr. David Bruser, was a team doctor. She was also an Argos season-ticket holder.
But Barbara was always, at heart, a Winnipegger.
After graduating from Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba, she went to Philadelphia to train in the medical research field. She went on to a long career as a lab technician at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Barbara was proud of her role in helping to develop an antigen test for prostate cancer.
She loved art, a passion she shared with her mother Gladys, who was a painter.
Barbara had a galloping case of wanderlust. She likely saw more of the world than any other Bruser. And she always made sure to visit Gladys and David when they wintered in Mallorca, Spain and then in Siesta Key, Florida. She walked to work on most days, 3 km each way, and on weekends she walked 10 km from her home in midtown to the waterfront.
Throughout her life Barbara donated to numerous arts and health charities and organizations. Giving was a big part of her life and will have a lasting impact.
Barbara is survived by her brother Bert (Joan) and sister Brina, and her niece Jessica and nephew David.
Barbara’s family is planning a Celebration of Life, the details for which will be available on the website of Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel when they are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the CNIB or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
