STEVEN RICHARD SCHMIDT
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our eldest son, Steven, a star that fell too soon. Brain cancer claimed him at 62, following his wife, Monica (Nee Massey), who was also taken early by cancer ten years earlier.
Steve is survived by his parents, Greg and Juliette “Julie” Schmidt; son Adam (Emmalene); daughter Erika (Grant); brothers, Michael, Philip (Christine), and David (Lynda); partner Kaye Kameron and a large extended family.
Steve was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated as the Gold Medalist in Computer Science from the University of Manitoba in 1986 and then went on to a brilliant career with IBM in Toronto and then Microsoft in Washington State.
Steve loved to ski and tackled some of the most difficult slopes through helicopter and caterpillar skiing. He also served children as a respected ski instructor.
Steve left Washington State four years ago, moving to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico where he generously supported university students and school children with gifts of computers, bicycles, and backpacks and by teaching English.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 10th at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, 2400 Portage Avenue at 1:30 pm. Steven’s final resting place is at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
For friends unable to attend, the funeral will be live streamed on the Church’s YouTube channel:

Julie and Greg, I am so sorry for your loss. Delighted to have met you in PV this winter; Dave and Lynda, Michael and Philip, so sorry for your loss. Erika and Adam, I look forward to seeing you both moving forward, sending much love and smiles. Kaye, many blessings in your new life. Steve held a unique and beautiful vision for human life on earth as depicted by his TIPI Logic. His strength is mirrored in his dedication towards being happy no matter what stumbling blocks life put up to redirect his energy. He had a special way of getting around hurtles, such as not being able to hold a glass steady. Like not at all!! Steve carved his own way forward, playing by his rules. He was smart enough to know that we actually make up the rules for our lives. He worked hard, and played even harder. He loved his family and would do anything for them. He had his priorities straight in his mind and lived by them even when it was hard. He had a great smile and used it often. he inspired many on their journeys. He introduced me to a lovely Mexican couple he was helping to become more independent with their own organic farm. It was an amazing project in the midst of being built. He chose this couple carefully to help as they are leaders in their community, him acting as mayor and implementing many projects to assist their struggling community. They loved Steve. They appreciated him, and their joy experienced from this relationship will grow and affect many others. Joy is contagious, and Steve was joyful. Many blessings on your next great adventure my friend. Thank you for Being a friend. Jacquelyn rose, Vernon BC - Posted by: Jacquelyn Rose (friend) on: Jun 08, 2026

I was a childhood friend of Monica and got to know Steve through skiing adventures. The kindest soul, he always had us in stitches with his antics and humour. Sending love to the family. - Posted by: Dawn Rueckl (nee Ridgway) (Friend) on: Jun 08, 2026

I knew Steve first some 50 years and still considered him one of my best friends even though I didn’t see him often given the distance between us. I have very fond memories of many fun times growing up together in St. James and many chess matches as he always loved to challenge me even though he rarely won. I had the good fortune of him visiting me for a week in Mexico in 2019, which is the last time I saw him and when I met Kaye, although we stayed in touch electronically and by phone. Gone far too early buddy. You’ll be missed. - Posted by: Jon van der Krabben (Friend) on: Jun 06, 2026
