BEVERLEY SMITH
Peacefully and with loved ones by her side, on May 17, 2026, Beverley took the final step on her life’s journey to join her beloved Lawrence.
Bev was born December 30, 1940, and grew up on Ashburn Street in Winnipeg’s West End with Mom Florence and Dad Alfred, finishing school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where she especially enjoyed singing in the school choir.
Mom joined the working world in her late teens as a secretary at the United Artists film company and eventually retired in the ’90s after stints in vacuum sales and an insurance office.
Bev met the love of her life in 1957 when Lawrence came into her life through an event at the neighbourhood church. Although Mom wasn’t an experienced outdoors-girl before Dad appeared, she eagerly jumped into the Smith’s very active camping/trailering/fishing world with both feet. The family cottage at Brereton Lake became one of their favourite landing spots, with Mom enjoying time there well into her later years.
July of 1961 brought even more brightness when Mom and Dad married, starting their 39-year journey together in a small apartment. A few years later came their first house on Rita Street, where sons, Terry (Karen) and Jeff (Karen) joined the picture and many long-lasting friendships began. Mom was a lifelong animal lover and her homes always enjoyed the warmth of pets, from her childhood budgie Mickey to dogs, Dixie, Punkin and Ranger, and various grand-dogs along the way. And if one permanent pet in the house wasn’t enough, there was always room to care for lost dogs while awaiting return to their rightful owners. Mom also had a fondness for flowers and delighted in getting her hands dirty in the garden tending her marigolds, geraniums, and various other plants.
Bev’s family was the most cherished part of her life and special occasions always involved a house full of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Her love of family grew even deeper when grandkids, Eric (Kristin), Alex, and Chloe arrived. Time spent with her grandkids and watching them all grow into accomplished young adults was a huge source of joy for her.
Mom was small in stature, but she had a very big heart and found much satisfaction in helping others by offering her limitless care and compassion.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, extended family, and dear friends, all of whom will miss her deeply. She was predeceased by husband (Lawrence), parents (Alf and Florence Thurlbeck), and her in-laws (John and Rose Smith).
As it was Beverley’s request to not hold a service, a private family Celebration of Life will take place. Beverley’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and friends who supported her in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Children’s’ Hospital Foundation.
