NELLIE RADEWICH

May 27, 1940 - September 21, 2026

It is with much sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Nellie Radewich (nee Shewchuk), formerly of Prawda, Manitoba, on September 21, 2026 at 86 years of age. Nellie lived her final months in Winnipeg at her daughter’s residence.

Nellie is survived by her daughter Doreen and her son Glen (Paul Bernardin). Mom is also survived by her brother Mike Shewchuk, sister-in-law Diane Shewchuk, many nieces (Cheryl, Debbie, Keriann, Val) and nephews (Barry, Brad, Brian, David, Wayne), and many other family members, cousins and friends.

Predeceasing Nellie was her husband Joseph/Joe (Jr.), whom she cared for at home in his final years; her parents, John and Mary Shewchuk; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph (Sr.) and Caroline Radewich; her brother and sister-in-law Steve and Lena Shewchuk; her brother and sister-in-law Alex and Mary Shewchuk; and her sister-in-law Helen Nazar and brother-in-law Mike Nazar.

Mom was born and raised on a farm in Elma, Manitoba, and as a younger adult she loved playing baseball, especially in the role of pitcher. She married her husband Joe in 1958. Initially they lived in Medika and then moved to Prawda where they resided for 61 years. After raising their two children, mom worked at local restaurants for many years, and then started employment at the Pineland Forest Nursery in 1982 where she worked for almost 20 years.

Nellie absolutely loved flowers. During her leisure time, mom enjoyed planting lots of flowers in the yard and took great pride in her flower gardens. Mom also planted a wide variety of vegetables in the large garden. She always looked forward to going out to pick blueberries, cranberries, strawberries and wild mushrooms. Along with all the vegetable and berry harvesting came a significant amount of pickling, canning and preserving in the autumn months.

Then when Christmas and Easter arrived, Nellie was really busy making large meals that included a wide assortment of fantastic, traditional Ukrainian and Polish dishes. Mom was a great cook! Her family and guests were not the only ones to enjoy her delicious home-made food. Mom loved to eat too, especially in her senior years. She wasn’t fussy and would eat or drink almost anything, including her preferred beverage, Pepsi!

Outside of the home, Nellie was well known throughout the decades for her involvement in the local community, particularly with the Reynolds Community Club (RCC), or as most people would call it, the “Prawda Hall”. Mom volunteered her time and energy by preparing food for various social events that were held at the Hall, including fall suppers, power toboggan races, poker derbies, bingos, etc. She was also a custodian at the Hall for a great many years, making sure that everything was clean, organized and ready to go for the next social event. However, those evenings when the Hall hosted bingo were especially enjoyable for mom, particularly if she was lucky enough to win the jackpot!

Although mom always had a great work ethic throughout her life, there were other things she enjoyed during her leisure time. These included: Getting together with other neighbours and friends for morning coffee at the local restaurant; Listening to Ukrainian music; Playing VLTs; Watching “The Young and the Restless” soap opera on television; Taking road trips with Joe and Doreen; her rescue cat, Fluffy; and the colour red which mom often wore.

Cremation has already taken place. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Birch River Community Cemetery in Medika. A luncheon will follow at the Reynolds Community Club in Prawda.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in mom’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Alternatively, a donation can be made to the Reynolds Community Club, Box 12, Group 15, Prawda, Manitoba, R0E 0X0 (although the RCC cannot issue a receipt for income tax purposes).
