Date of Passing: Jul 27, 2000
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN WILLIAM SYSA Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his family by his side, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of John Sysa, at the age of 82 years, on Thursday July 27, 2000 at the Riverview Health Centre. John leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Merle, of 51 years of marriage; his daughter Melody (Earle) Johnson and son Martin (Kim) and four loving grandchildren, Melinda, Krista, Matthew and Wesley all of Winnipeg; his sister Olga (Joe) Bohotchuk and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his dearest nephew Michael (Jill) Boychuk, as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Nicholas Sysa; mother Nellie Mostowy; brother Walter and sister-in-law Kay Sysa, and sister Ruth and brother-in-law Sonny Tkachuk. John was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, and spent 38 years employed with Eatons until his retirement in 1979. He served in the Second World War with the NRMA in the North Pacific Area (Aleutian Islands) before being posted to the United Kingdom with the Canadian Infantry Corps in 1944. After returning from overseas in 1946, John met and married Merle, residing in Winnipeg to raise their family. Dad loved family gatherings and was especially fond of his dear grandchildren. Gigi never took an afternoon nap, he always told his grandchildren he was only pressing blankets. He always maintained his sense of humour and never dwelled on his hardships. His generosity and unconditional love will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him. Johns Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Atlantic Garden City United Church, 725 Atlantic Ave. at Arlington St. with Rev. Doug Martindale officiating. Our family would like to express a special thanks to the caring, supportive and compassionate caregivers of Riverview 3 East. Flowers are gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, should family and friends so desire, donations in Johns memory may be made to the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, 100 Olivia St., Wpg., R3E 9Z9. "Keep pressing those blankets.... Catch a pie, Gigi, catch a pie!" WOJCIKS FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM 897 - 4665
