Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN JUNE SYMES (nee HILL) Peacefully on October 15, 2000 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Helen Symes passed away after a courageous four and one-half year struggle with cancer. Helen was born in Winnipeg on July 16, 1931. She moved to Toronto shortly after graduating from the University of Manitoba and worked as a Social Worker and Psychometrist in Toronto and Cornwall, Ontario. She returned to Winnipeg to be with her family after the death of her husband Raymond in 1985. Helen was active in Little Theatre and performed in various productions at the University of Manitoba and in Toronto. She was an avid short story writer and enjoyed her association with the Winnipeg Senior Citizens Writers Workshop. She was also a current member of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Helen was predeceased by her husband Raymond and her parents, Fred Martin and Mary Cecilia Hill. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Shirlee (Ed) Blackman, Margaret (Pete) Del Castillo, Jean (Ed) Birnie, Joan Hill (Brown) step-daughters, Kim Symes and Tina (Symes) Zaczyk; step-sons, Lloyd, Paul and Scott Symes; long time friend Betty Symes and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Helens life will be held on Friday, October 20, at 1:00 p.m. in the St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate Street. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Paul Kerr, Candace Myers and the staff of 6A West, especially nurse Cheryl, for their care and understanding.
