MARY SWERYD (nee BOGDA) Peacefully, with her family by her side, Mary passed away after 99 fulfilling years of life. Mary was predeceased by her husband Dmytro, (1984) and her son Peter, (1986). The memories of her life will be cherished by her children, Cecilia (Chuck), Gladys (Bob) and Eleanor (Carl) her grandchildren, Susan (Ken), Randy (Debbie), Tammy (John), David (Jessica), Tannis (Ken), Kevin (Patricia), Krystal (Jason) and her great-grandchildren, Kael, Tory, Kelsey, Briane, Matthew, Braeden, Sarah, Emma, Madeline, Adam, Erin, Kaitlyn. Mary was born in 1902 in Rohtyn, Ukraine. She was born the fourth of five children, Heinka, Kashka, Paranka and Petro. Mary left the Ukraine in 1927 in an effort to escape an unwanted and prearranged marriage. She lived with her younger sister upon her arrival in Winnipeg where she met her beloved Dymtro. The two were married in 1930 and lived on Eaton Street before purchasing a house on Sherbrook Street where they celebrated many years of happiness with their family. After Dymtros passing, Mary moved to an apartment in the Polish Manor and then to Holy Family Nursing Home. Mary was well known for her strong personality and work ethic. Her feistiness is illustrated in the assorted employment opportunities she welcomed throughout her lifetime: maid, night watch person, caretaker for the Macs Theatre, security guard for a local thrift store, and cleaner for the Pembina Drive Inn. Mary loved to sing, cook, play bingo and cards, (Thirtyone & Holla) and work in her garden. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was always finding reason to rejoice. A celebration of Marys life will be held at Bardal Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 4 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation one hour prior to service. Reverend Father Darren Kawiuk officiating. Interment Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy East, Kevin Sweryd, David Hopwood, Ken Onchulenko, John Mitchell, and Ken Sidloski.
