ELIZABETH (BETSY) ANNE TALLIN (HURD)
Born: Nov 15, 1927
Date of Passing: Oct 21, 2001
Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH (BETSY) ANNE TALLIN (nee HURD) Elizabeth (Betsy) Anne Tallin passed away suddenly Sunday, October 21, 2001 after a brief illness. Betsy was predeceased by her husband Rhodes of 43 years. She is survived by cousin Donald Hurd and his wife Alice; brother-in-law Rae Tallin and his wife Linda; Rhodes aunt Ruth Tallin; her three sons, Andrew his wife Maria and their daughter Gabriela, Jeffery, his wife Shelly and their children, Naomi and Darcy, and Christopher, his son Ben, and Bens mother Barbara. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and committed professional teacher. She was born on November 15, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Cornell University, in 1949 in Ithaca, NY. She returned to Philadelphia after graduating, where she met and married Rhodes Tallin. She and Rhodes moved back to Rhodes hometown Winnipeg in 1954, where they raised three sons. And despite her early difficulties adjusting to her adopted countrys cold climate and long winters, she became a Canadian citizen and ardent patriot. She earned her certificate of education from the University of Manitoba in 1965 and joined the teaching staff at Dakota Collegiate in St. Vital in 1968, where she stayed until she retired in 1988 to care for her ailing husband until his death in 1994. As a teacher Betsy was a perfectionist, who spent many late nights preparing lessons and grading papers. By her friends and colleagues she will be remembered for her pragmatic manner and her strong intellect - always thoughtful, but always kind. As a mother she spent many hours officiating at sports events, watching swimming practices, leading cub scouts, and later in life, encouraging her sons in their studies and professional undertakings, and taking joy in their successes. A celebration of Betsys life will be held at St. Vital United Church, 937 St. Marys Road on Wednesday, October 24, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu flowers, the family requests a donation to the charity of your choice in her name.
