ALFRED ORVAL TAPLIN 1925 - 2001 Peacefully, with his family at his side, on Sunday, December 9, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer at the Dr. Evelyn Memorial Hospital, Stonewall, Alfred Orval (Orv) passed away at the age of 76 years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Shirley (nee Fright) daughter Merle; granddaughters, Tammy (Rob) Boonstra, Kimberley Olson (Wade) his beloved great-granddaughters, Chelsea and Chantal. He will also be remembered by his five brothers, Ray (Elza), Don (Muriel), Fred (Elaine), Lloyd (Audrey), Ken (Sharon) and his two brothers-in-law, Don (Jean), Den (Pat) numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Orv was predeceased by daughter Marlene and son-in-law Terry Olson; his parents, Cerce and Eva Taplin; mother and father-in-law, Jack and Grace Fright; and sister-in-law Charlotte Fright. Orv was born on June 18, 1925 on the family farm at Argyle where he grew up. He attended school at Grassmere and Stonewall. He joined the Navy at the age of 18 and served during the Second World War overseas. Upon return from the war, he worked for various families in the district. He also worked for the CN in Atikokan, ON and for many years worked for Argyle Transfer. In 1950, Orv purchased his first farm in the Argyle district. In 1951 he married Shirley and they resided there until their move to the original family farm in 1976. He drove the school bus for the Interlake School Division for 20 years until his retirement in 2001. Throughout the years Orv enjoyed participating in curling, pool, card games and was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 222. The most fulfilling moments of his life were spent with his family and working on his farm. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ralph Wong and his assistant Kathy at the St. Boniface Hospital. A very special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at the Dr. Evelyn Memorial Hospital, for their care and support shown to Orv and to his family during his illness. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. Bev Ward will officiate, with a private family interment to follow in the Stonewall Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ray Taplin, Don Taplin, Fred Taplin, Lloyd Taplin, Ken Taplin and Rob Boonstra. Family and friends are to be considered honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Orvs memory to CancerCare Manitoba, ON109 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 208 - 900 St. James St., Winnipeg, MB, R3G 3J7.
