Lydia passed away peacefully in Selkirk at the Selkirk and District General Hospital after suffering a heart attack. Lydia was predeceased by her husband Albert in 1990. She is survived by her sister Ge Steinmeijer of the Netherlands. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Ann, son-in-law Ron Greening, grandchildren, Chris and Julia; numerous relatives in the Netherlands and Canada as well as by her many friends. Lydia and Albert left the Netherlands in 1952 to come to Selkirk where she began a career with the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. Warm, caring, energetic, and competent, Lydia was a natural nurse and was very proud of the nursing profession. For many years, she taught at the School of Nursing. After her retirement, she maintained an interest in her profession, and continued to follow developments in the health care profession. Lydias greatest love was her grandchildren and she took delight in watching them grow and develop from the time they were babies to the teenagers they are now. She loved to spend time with them and was extremely proud of all their accomplishments. Another of Lydiaa loves was classical music an she had a beautiful voice. She could often be heard singing pieces from Bach or Beethoven. For a number of years she sang with the Selkirk Community Choir, and the practices and concerts were the high points of her week. She loved to sing to her grandchildren and teach them songs or listen to them practice piano. Lydia was a gracious person, noted for her wisdom, understanding and compassion. A kind and loyal friend to many, she never tired of meeting new people. At social gatherings, her genuine interest in people, and her warm and generous spirit ensured that everyone she met felt comfortable and welcome, and happy to be present. We will all miss her so much. Thanks to the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital who cared for Lydia so kindly, gently and proficiently as she passed away.
