LISA JANE LUGTIG, M.D., C.C.F.P JULY 3 , 1957 - APRIL 25, 2003 Peacefully at home, after a courageous battle with cancer, Lisa passed away on April 25, at the age of 45. Lisa will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Nicholas; her parents Don and Shelly; her sisters, Susan (Noel), Joni, and Sarah; her father-in-law Bob and mother-in-law Christine; nephews Dan, Noel, Tobin, Michael, Andrew and Robert; brother-in-law Mark (Cindy), sister-in-law Fiona (David) as well as her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lisa was an exemplary daughter, sister, aunt, wife, physician, and friend who lived her life with integrity, purpose, and spirit. Selflessness, quality of care, and compassion were attributes she embodied. She learned these values from her parents and teachers. She lived her life according to these values, and she imparted these attributes as a teacher herself. As a doctor, Lisa treated illnesses, eased suffering, enabled healing, promoted wellness, and particularly enjoyed helping others bring new life into the world. Lisa had eclectic interests outside of work that satisfied her deep appreciation for ethics and aesthetics. She read widely, enjoyed a variety of music, and collected antiques. She had a great capacity for enjoyment, and the rare ability to give joy and still be an understated person. A special thanks to Dr. Lorne Brandes as well as the staff and nurses of CancerCare Manitoba. Their resourcefulness and skill enabled Lisa to long outlive her initial prognosis. She lived those extra years as she wished. Keeping active and helping others was what made her happy. A memorial service will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, on Thursday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made in Lisa's memory to a fund for the education and training of northern nurses: the Christine Egan Memorial Medical College Foundation, Room 149, 730 William Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0W3. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dear Lisa's family and friends, As I approach my 50th birthday, I have begun making a list of all the persons who I felt significantly impacted my life over the years. My time in Rankin Inlet (then N.W.T.) was brief, but hugely rewarding professionally. Lisa was instrumental in making that experience so successful. I totally agree with the wonderful words I read in her obituary, which I am seeing for the first time over a decade after her passing. I wanted each of you to know the incredible long lasting effect her teaching and friendship had on my life. I went on to graduate from Johns Hopkins with degrees in medicine and public health. I completed the injury research Lisa was such a great help with, and went on to complete both family medicine and preventive medicine residencies. She was a source of great encouragement as I continued work in the area of remote health care delivery and rural health care policy. I served as a regional health officer in public health for several states and set on several national commissions and committees dealing with rural health care delivery in the U.S. My time in the Keewatin, along with the valuable lessons I learned working and traveling with Lisa, had a huge impact on my life and career. I will forever remember her fondly and with great gratitude for the wonderful example and teacher she was. My sincerest gratitude and thankfulness for a life well lived. Thank you Lisa! Sincerely, Bill Welder, MD - Posted by: Bill Welder, MD (one of Lisa's former students) on: Apr 23, 2014
