DONNA LYNN SWISTUN It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Donna Swistun at St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, June 23, 2003, after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Donna was born in Winnipeg on May 27, 1948, and graduated from St. Marys Academy in 1967. She taught Grade 2 in Russell, MB from 1968 to 1970, and then kindergarten in Inuvik, NWT from 1970 to 1972, where she met Dennis, the love of her life. Donna will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dennis of 33 years; son Craig (Kimberly) daughter Melanie (Ian) Barnett; grandchildren, Madeleine and Alexander; and mother Gladys Duncan. She will also be remembered by her brothers, John (Donna) Duncan and Bob (Denise) Duncan; many nieces, nephews and their families; as well as numerous friends. Donna was predeceased by her father John Duncan. Donna ran the Tiny Tots program with Chris Lewin (Mrs. Chris) from 1978 to 1985, and was later named Assistant Director at Seven Oaks Child Day Care in 1986. She was active with the Manitoba Child Care Association, sat on their editorial committee, chaired three provincial conferences, sat on their Board of Directors, and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. Donna was very active in the Breast Cancer Community, and volunteered at the Breast Cancer Centre of Hope as part of a peer support team. She chaired the first "Together Living with Breast Cancer" Conference in 1999, and co-chaired the second in 2002. She was a member of the Patients Advocates Advisory Group. Donna was also the recipient of the Queens Jubilee Medal in January 2003, recognizing work done in childcare and within the Breast Cancer Community. A special thank you to the doctors and support staff of the oncology departments at the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital, as well as the Palliative Care Unit of St. Boniface Hospital. The family wishes to thank all those who kept Donna in their thoughts and prayers over the past years. Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Ave., with reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seven Oaks Child Day Care Building Fund, 1010 Sinclair St., Winnipeg, MB R2V 3H7, or to CancerCare Manitoba: Breast Cancer Centre of Hope, Rm.
