Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALFRED E. DEACON, M.D. (FRCS) Passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital on Thursday, February 19, 2004, in his 102nd year, with Janet, his devoted wife of 72 years, holding his hand, and with the comfort and support of Chris and Shelagh Deacon. Alf was a leading orthopaedic surgeon in Winnipeg, graduating in medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1929; after studying post-graduate surgery in Winnipeg, he took orthopaedic training in practice with the Mayo brothers at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN in the 1930s, and also received a Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota. He was on the orthopaedic staff at Winnipeg Childrens Hospital, Grace Hospital and Winnipeg General, was a surgeon at the Winnipeg Shriners Hospital until 1968, and an assistant professor of orthopaedics at the University of Manitoba. He was a founding member of the Winnipeg Orthopaedic Society, and a member of many medical associations and societies. Alf, who was known far and wide as "Uncle Alf" not only to his nieces and nephews, but to the children of his many friends, was an extraordinary man. He had a renowned sense of humour, coupled with an enquiring mind, a prodigious memory, always a strong focus on the task at hand, and a love of boats and gadgets, large and small. He was a wonderfully generous man, who always remembered the birthdays of his nieces and nephews and their children, and often quietly helped young people to achieve their dreams. He will be greatly missed, and is survived by his loving wife Janet; and his nieces, Elaine Yates of Tottenham, ON, Louise Adnams of Edmonton, Nancy Pridham of Toronto; his nephew Thomas Jamieson of Toronto; and his cousin John Deacon of Winnipeg and their spouses and children. The funeral service will be held at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Thursday, February 26 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow upstairs at Thomsons. I first met Dr. Deacon when I was just 3 years old in 1945. My mother had taken me to the Children's Hospital because of what we learned to be osteomyelitis. At another hospital, a doctor suggested my leg should be amputated due to the infection; my mother was not prepared to let that happen. When in the care of Dr. Deacon, he stated the leg could be saved with a new medication...penicillin. Dr. Deacon cared for me during this healing process for some time to come. With my leg intact I continued to live every day thanking Dr. Deacon for saving my leg! He had the largest impact on my life. Today, at the age of 82, I always remember him in my prayers. My sincere and profound sympathy to his family and friends. I'm so happy to hear he lived to the beautiful age of 102. May his soul rest in eternal peace. - Posted by: Cecelia Hart (Patient) on: Mar 11, 2025

Dr. Deacon was the doctor to perform the first ever surgery on my mom when she was 14 years old. My mom attributes her ability to use her right arm to Dr. Deacon. My mom became ill with paralytic polio at the age of five and had no use of her right arm. With his knowledge and skills Dr. Deacon was able to connect the arm muscles to my mom’s scapula enabling her the use of her right arm. He did such a good job no employer ever knew my mom was paralyzed and she was able to live a full and wonderful life. Dr. Deacon will forever be remembered and our family sends love with condolences to his family. Rest in Peace - Posted by: Sharon Braun (nee Tonn) (Patient when she was 14 years old) on: Dec 19, 2024
