Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWIESLAWA ZOFIA (SOPHIE) SZCZERSKI Finally free of her limitations and frailties of age, our Mama, Babci and friend peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2004. Sophie was predeceased by her parents and husband (1996). She is survived by her three children and six grandchildren: daughter Benna (Sandy) Thornton-Trump; sons, Ed (Doreen) and Tom (Yvonne) Szczerski. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren, Ian (Marcella) Thornton-Trump, Ellowyn (Jason) Nadeau,Janow Lubelski, Poland, Sophie was the only child of Maria Lodzia-Michalska and Kazimierz Dybczynski. She was educated at home until at the age of 14, when she left home to attend the Urseline Convent in Lublin Carl, David, Michael and Andrea Szczerski. Born on January 2, 1923 in , Poland. During her time in school and living in an occupied Poland, she developed fortitude of spirit that would become a defining characteristic throughout her life. Sophie met Mihal Edward Szczerski during the war and they were married in 1942. Circumstances of war caused numerous separations until 1949 when Sophie and her daughter arrived in Canada via Halifax at the now famous Pier 51. Making her way in February to Winnipeg, the newly reunited family finally settled in the Fort Rouge area and bought a house on Nassau Street, which was home for many years. Sophie and Edward had two sons to add to their family: Edward and Tomasz. Sophie worked for many years at Quintons Cleaners before she left for a career at Manitoba Telephone System. She worked in the Directory and Traffic Departments, retiring in 1987. Her joy was to walk with her dog, Brandy and explore the neighborhoods she lived in. In her recent move to Catherine Place, she felt the sharp loss of having to give up her little four-legged friend, whom she missed deeply every day. Before her loss of vision she greatly enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, knitting, sewing, reading and before it was deemed unhealthy, sun tanning! Her loss of vision in recent years restricted her activities, yet it did not diminish her spirit or interest in the world. She had a sharp mind and loved to engage her visitors in stories from the past and news in the present. She had an opinion on everything and was not shy to share it with others! The family wishes to thank Dr. R Hayward for his long continued care and express our appreciation for the compassion of Dr. Mowat and the staff of the Emergency Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be said at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave. on Wednesday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Missionaries of Charity, 167 Aikins St. or the Heart and Stroke Fund. May Dad and Mama be reunited and rest in peace. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd -1-877-230-0438
