GEORGE SWIFT It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Swift on February 10, 2005 at the age of 83. George leaves to mourn his sons, Greg (Mabel) and Jeff; grandson Ryne; brothers, Harold and Walter; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Evelyn (1995); brothers, Walter (1919) and Tom (2002); parents, Priscilla (1923) and Harry (1968); and stepmother Margaret (1968). George was born on November 17, 1921 in Birmingham, England and immigrated with his parents to Winnipeg in 1922. He attended school at King George V, Lord Selkirk, and St. John High. In 1941 George enlisted in the RCAF, serving his country as a pilot and flight instructor until his discharge in 1945. He would later attain the rank of flight officer as an air force reservist from 1951 to 1953. Following the Second World War, he enrolled at Dawson College (McGill) in Montreal for a year, earning a letter in hockey, before transferring to the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1950. George was subsequently employed by the Western Canada Underwriters' Association in Winnipeg, then moved to Seattle in 1957 to work for Boeing Aircraft. He returned home in 1958 to accept a position with the Province of Manitoba, acting as its water rights engineer until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure there, George assisted in rewriting the Water Rights Act and was instrumental in developing the water resources division to its current level of prominence. He was a member of the Association for Professional Engineers of the Province of Manitoba from 1956, as well as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1945. George will be fondly remembered as a kind and modest man, one who enjoyed helping others, and who was generous with his time, advice, and finances. He remained, until just prior to his death, an active member of the Legion, an avid bridge player, dog fancier, a devoted friend, father, and grandfather, and sole proprietor of the family taxi service. He will be dearly missed. His family wishes to extend its gratitude to Dr. Gorski and the staff at Concordia Hospital for all their care and support. Cremation has already taken place, with interment to be held at Glen Eden at a later date. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., R2L 1X3. KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson - North of McIvor - 338-0331
